OUR NEW HOME
Is the big news for Wexford Historical Society. Courtesy of Wexford Festival, from November onward we will have permanent lecture and meeting facilities at the new Opera House, where we will also have a permanent mailing address. This is an exciting and historic development to which everyone will look forward. Annual 12 month membership subscription remains at £20 (or €25).
JUNE OUTING:
On June 22nd a coach will leave Wexford (Talbot Hotel) at 9.30 a.m. for visit to Waterford Treasures/Granary museum and guided tour of historic Waterford city. Lunch of soup/ sandwiches is pre-booked for the group at Tower hotel. Coach continues to ‘New Geneva’ and Faithlegg for visits and historical commentary, followed by afternoon tea/scones at Faithlegg Hotel. Return to Wexford by 6.45 p.m. Cost for coach and meals €25. Restricted to 30 paid-up members. Bookings to Eithne Scallan 053 9122973. Tour organisers Ian Hearn and John McCormack.
JULY OUTING:
On July 20th, a coach will depart Wexford (Talbot Hotel) at 11a.m. with Nicky Furlong leading a visit to ferns with its history and antiquities and emphasis on its prehistoric and historic significance. Cost of travel €15. Lunch available (own account) at the Heritage Centre or at the Courtyard Restaurant opposite. Assistant organiser Eamon Dundon.
ALL TOURS ARE SUBSIDISED FROM SOCIETY FUNDS TO REDUCE COSTS TO MEMBERS.
LECTURE SEASON
September 10, 8 p.m. Celestine Rafferty will give her lecture on A TALE OF TWO CHURCHES which had to be postponed from April. Venue will be Riverbank House Hotel – as usual the lecture will be free to members and admission for visitors will be €5.
October 8, 2008: THE GEORGE HADDEN MEMORIAL LECTURE this year will be a very special occasion. Westford Festival Chairman Paul Hennessy will speak about the new Wexford Opera House, and the lecture will take place in the Opera House at 8. p.m.
November 19, 2008 at 8 p.m. Professor Fergus D’Arcy author of Remembering the Dead, War Graves in Ireland, will lecture on this topic in the New Opera House.
December 7, 2008 Society’s Annual Christmas Lunch will take place (seating by 1 o’clock) at Riverbank House Hotel on Sunday 7th (Cost €21.50 payable on the day). Bookings should be made in advance with Hon. Sec. Eithne Scallan at 053 9122973.
The talk immediately following lunch will be given by well-known ornithologist and wildlife expert Christ Wilson, on the subject of his great-uncle EDWARD WILSON, remarkable scientist and artist who accompanied Scott to the South Pole. The lecture with deal with ‘Edward Wilson through his Art’.
